Termites
Termites are social insects that live in large colonies. They meet their nutritional needs by feeding on the cellulose found in wood and other organic compounds. Subterranean termites are the most common kind of termite in our region. These termites prefer to feed on wet or decaying wood, nest under the ground, and travel through the soil or mud tubes they create to maintain their high moisture needs.
Controlling termites is tricky because they spend their lives primarily hidden. We often discover their damage before seeing the termites, such as bubbling paint, mud tubes, spongy feeling wood, or any wood damage. If termites are in your home, they will likely cause damage to structural wood near windows, doors, and pipes. Other places to discover termite damage are floor beams, wood trim, and floor joists.
To prevent problems with termites:
- Ensure gutters and weatherstripping are in good working order to stop rainwater from entering your home.
- Make sure gutters are working to direct water away from the exterior of your house.
- Quickly repair leaky pipes and fixtures and use dehumidifiers and ventilating fans to help eliminate excess moisture within your home.

Spiders
Spiders are unique-looking creatures with eight legs, two body segments, and a lack of antennae and wings. While not all spiders can produce the silk these critters are known for, not all spiders use their silk to build webs. Other uses for spider silk include tethers, a way to wrap up their insect prey, and a cocoon to protect young spiders. Spiders also produce venom that they use to paralyze their insect prey.
Nuisance spiders in Kentucky, like wolf and cellar spiders, have venom only potent enough to harm their insect prey. Dangerous spiders include species like the brown recluse and black widow that have venom potent enough to harm people.

- Avoid attracting insects and spiders to the outside of your home by keeping lids on trash cans, turning off exterior lights when possible, and cutting back shrubs and trees from your house.

Rodents
Rodents make up the largest group of mammals; they play important roles in nature, helping to disperse seeds and some pollination, arete the soil, and act as a food source for larger animals. Cockroaches
